The most revealing detail about Aquilon Terminators is the reason the Custodes deploy them. In GW’s Talons of the Emperor, their armour is a response to battlefields so dangerous that even the Emperor’s guardians require extra protection. When a mission takes them into lethal enclosed environments, Aquilons carry heavy firepower forward while keeping the warriors inside alive.
That gives their imposing silhouette a purpose. Every Custodian committed to an assault is precious. Aquilon plate brings together a specially adapted suit, a powerful wearer and weapons drawn from Terra’s guarded armouries, concentrating an extraordinary investment in the few warriors sent through the breach.
Armour for the killing ground
The Aquilon Terminator Sodality entry in Talons of the Emperor, page 8, says the Legio employed these formations as necessity demanded. It singles out Zone Mortalis environments, where the Custodes sought to avoid needless casualties and relied on Aquilon protection to carry mobile heavy firepower.
The wider history of Terminator armour explains the problem. Index Astartes Apocrypha’s Terminator Armour describes ship-to-ship assaults, tunnel clearances and hive fighting as situations calling for concentrated firepower in confined spaces. Its account explains how the bulk of a Dreadnought could become a liability in those conditions. Heavily protected infantry offered a way to bring formidable weapons into the same close quarters.
Read alongside that background, the Aquilon entry becomes a statement about the value of the wearer. An exceptionally capable warrior still has to cross the ground an enemy has prepared. A confined approach concentrates danger around the route the assault must take. The Custodes answer that problem by increasing the protection and firepower of the individual advancing through it.

Cataphractii rebuilt around a Custodian
The same Talons of the Emperor entry identifies Aquilon armour as a further development of the Cataphractii patterns used by the Legiones Astartes. Its construction accommodates Custodian physiques, with additional integrated power systems and capacitors addressing weaknesses in the original design.
The adaptation matters because a suit of powered armour is machinery as well as plating. Its power systems have to support the wearer and the work the suit is expected to perform. The Aquilon account connects those engineering changes to its role as a moving platform for heavy weapons.
GW’s Aquilon introduction adds the other half of that relationship: selected veterans entrusted with exceptionally rare and durable armour. The suit and its wearer are both valuable. Together they embody a recurring Custodian approach to war—concentrating remarkable resources and skill in a small force.

A storm bolter with generations of work behind it
The Lastrum storm bolter shows how far that investment extends into ammunition. In Talons of the Emperor’s Armoury of the Legio Custodes, page 26, Lastrum weapons take their name from the Lastrum Core Clan of Terra’s Appolyne workshops.
Their craftsmen produce customised, hand-manufactured heliothermic warheads. The shells detonate inside the target with intense incendiary force. Their unusual density requires a stronger propellant charge, and the weapons themselves are built to withstand the resulting stresses.
The armoury describes generations of the clan’s output barely satisfying Custodian demand. The familiar shape of a bolt weapon therefore conceals a whole chain of specialised work: ammunition manufacture, reinforced construction and the accumulated labour of a Terran workshop tradition.
On an Aquilon, that weapon joins the protection needed to carry it into the assault. The lore makes both parts of the combination expensive in knowledge and effort.
Adrathic weapons and the Emperor’s monopoly
The adrathic combi-destructor carries a different Terran history. The armoury’s Adrathic Weapons section, page 25, traces the technology to the Dark Age of Technology and describes beams that sever matter’s internal bonds. Their victims unravel, leaving a flaring afterimage.
During the Age of Strife, possession of recovered adrathic caches was enough to provoke wars on Terra. After establishing his dominion, the Emperor demanded that the weapons be surrendered. The threatened punishment extended to the land and nation sheltering anyone who retained them.
The account says the knowledge of reproducing these weapons remained with his personal weaponsmiths, who made them in small numbers, to the envy of Mars. An Aquilon carrying an adrathic weapon therefore bears a piece of the Emperor’s control over dangerous technology. Its place in the arsenal reflects political ownership as much as destructive power.
That history gives the weapon a particularly Custodian character: ancient power, carefully restricted, entrusted to a guardian serving at the centre of Imperial authority.
Fire and the legacy of the Thunder Warriors
The same armoury describes infernus flame weapons, including the firepike, as masterwork armaments expressing the Custodes’ willingness to use fire as a weapon of terror. Aquilon warfare includes that deliberately frightening method alongside the technical sophistication of adrathic beams and Lastrum ammunition.
Their Solarite melee weapons reach back into Terra’s earlier wars. The Solarite Weapons section, page 29, says the gauntlets and their taloned variants were first fashioned for elite Thunder Warriors. Their distinguishing features include precious artefact power coils and extraordinarily durable casings and blades, forged using furnaces recovered from the ancient Tempest galleries near Terra’s molten core.
An Aquilon’s equipment brings those histories together: developments in Terminator armour, workshop traditions sustained across generations, weapons gathered under the Emperor’s authority and melee technology first made for his earlier warriors. Terra’s past remains physically present in the equipment of its guardians.
What the extra armour protects
The Aquilon entry offers a clear answer to why the Custodes use Terminator armour: some missions demand protected, mobile heavy firepower, and the Legio places a high value on bringing its warriors through them alive.
Their weapons deepen that answer. A single Aquilon carries the work of specialised craftsmen and access to technologies concentrated around the Emperor’s household. The imposing figure advancing into close quarters represents an entire system of guarded knowledge and exceptional expenditure.
That is what makes Aquilons interesting within the Custodes. Their armour protects a warrior whose survival matters enormously, while their weapons show how much of Terra’s power has been placed in his hands.
